[PAGE Jr. Members]
This month, we are going to make an effort to gain a human rights perspective on refugee issues.
- Watch this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDgIVseTkuE
- Read the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). https://www.ohchr.org/sites/default/files/UDHR/Documents/UDHR_Translations/eng.pdf
- Choose one article of the UDHR you would like to focus your assignment on. For example, you could choose Article 1: All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.
- Then, find a real-world example in which there was a violation of this article. (It must be related to refugee or immigrant issues.) Add your slide to this powerpoint. Just one slide is enough! https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1qNDdd-q0kjd9bDIdGwubjnMiiLylAxHxldSsah2pSDw/edit?usp=sharing If the link does not work, just email your work to me!

Please read the book “Inside Out and Back Again” by Thanhha Lai.
You can either purchase the book if you prefer a paper copy or use this pdf.
https://www.mcpsmt.org/cms/lib/MT01001940/Centricity/Domain/4546/InsideOutandBackAgainCompletePDF.pdf
Here’s a short description of the book: “Vietnam to Alabama is a difficult journey, and Ha’s story (which echoes the author’s life) chronicles it in beautiful free verse. Easy to read even for a reluctant reader, these poems are a good way into one 10-year-old girl’s experience as a refugee.”
If you can, try reading the whole book since it will help you follow the storyline. Choose one poem that particularly resonates with you, and be ready to answer this question. Can you interpret the meaning of the poem? Use details from the poem to support your interpretation. Try to take notes while you read if you can!

Happy World Refugee Day!
World Refugee Day - PAGE Group Project
**There will be no additional homework assignments except this project, so I urge everyone to participate!
1. Make a sign on a piece of paper that celebrates World Refugee Day. Some examples: “Happy World Refugee Day” or “Refugees are Welcome!” or “PAGE Welcome Refugees!”
Please make sure the sign looks neat and colorful since we will be posting this on our website. Also, I know there are a couple of siblings in our group, so if you don’t want to make individual signs and videos, siblings can just make one and share!
2. While holding up the handmade sign, film a video of yourself! We will be using your individual videos to create a group video. Feel free to do whatever you want to do in the video. Here are some ideas you could choose from: you can introduce yourself and talk about how you are celebrating World Refugee Day, what World Refugee Day means to our group PAGE, recite a poem, sing a song, or all of the above! I don’t mind what you do, but put in some effort. Remember, we are CELEBRATING and HONORING the strength, courage, and resilience of refugees. Have some fun with the project! Butterfly: From Refugee to Olympian, My Story of Rescue, Hope and Triumph by Yusra Mardini

Read this book, and choose one memorable quote from the book that you'd like to share with the group. Tell us why this quote was memorable, and how you think it captures the main message of the story. Again, for those of you who participate in the reading assignment, you do not have to do the assignments written below!

[Homework for PAGE March Meeting]
**Optional Reading Assignment (Ahyoung, Kate, and Kaylee - I strongly recommend!!)
For those of you who want to read a book for this month, this is the assigned reading. Read this book by Malala Yousafzai, and think about the author’s purpose of writing this book. Be ready to share some recurring themes during our next meeting.
Short book description: “In We Are Displaced, Nobel peace prize winner Malala Yousafzai describes her own experiences living in a Pakistan ruled by the Taliban and shares the stories of nine other displaced girls - from countries like Colombia, Syria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo – whom Malala has met throughout her journey as an activist for girls education. This powerful book highlights the struggles, hopes and dreams of young girls behind the staggering statistics of forced displacement” (UNHCR).
Homework for PAGE Members
**For those of you who read the book, you do not have to do this assignment!
Look up “Malala Yousafzai” and learn about her life. Where was she born? What did she experience? What kinds if events led her to become who she is now? What is her mission? I recommend you create a powerpoint, drawing, or some sort of visual to show me that you’ve done the work! - This is a comment that was posted by an anonymous person on one of my YouTube videos. How would you respond to this person’s comment? Write a paragraph about how you would respond to this paragraph. If you were to send a direct message to this person, what would you say? I want to see your thoughts and opinions, so don’t write what you think I’d like to hear, but rather, what you actually think! When you are done with the writing, share it with me via kakaotalk, email, or google docs.
“Are you saying that we should still help refugees when they are causing such harm to the citizens of European countries they are settling in? Currently, in Europe, sexual crime rates are increasing because of Islamic refugees, and they cannot even punish them because of the non-discrimination law. It is important to feel sympathy for other people, but this is completely different from accepting people who have totally different cultures, like refugees. Islam is a regime before it is a culture. That is why it cannot assimilate into other cultures. I am not trying to say we should discriminate against Islamic refugees, but I am saying that it is more important to protect our citizens, our families, and our children. Please, think about why the refugee crisis in Europe is so serious, why other Islamic countries who have the same religion as refugees who are Islam are not accepting them, and why many Islamic people who say they are refugees are not usually women or children but young men and young adults.” |

Member Participation Needed for Refugee Student!
A refugee student I work with through World Relief will be receiving surgery next month. Being hospitalized is a very emotionally and physically painful process, so we decided to make an encouraging video for her. If you feel comfortable sending me a short video of yourself encouraging her, that would be great!
*Try to submit them to me before June 13th!

4th Meeting - February 2021
Hello everyone!
We will not be reading a new book this month because the discussion lasted longer than I had expected! However, it will be a chance for all of us to take a look at the books again!
HW: Please choose one CONFLICT that you notice in the book. Then, prepare a creative project in relation to this “conflict”.
You could do a drawing, write a paragraph, create a video/voice recording, or create a short presentation about this conflict. If you want to do something else, just let me know!
** Be sure your project answers what the conflict is and why this conflict is important in the story. We will be presenting each of these individual activities during our meeting!
